Rite Aid deals tutorial

I understand Rite Aid deals can get pretty confusing. In fact, I recently had a RA manager comment about how much of a pain the deals can be and he personally would rather they just put things on sale instead of making customers jump through hoops. I can't say I really blame RA...after all, you can't just expect them to hand out steals. Here's a little tutorial on how things work. Hopefully it'll help you score a great deal there.
First of all, some terminologies. I've bolded the abbreviations as that's what I'll use in my posts. I'll also try to post this list of terms in the bottom of my Rite Aid posts for references.
* W+ = Wellness + - Rite Aid's loyalty program
** SCR = Single Check Rebates - Rite Aid's rebate program.
*** +UP = +UP Rewards - Rite Aid's promo coupon program
**** RAVV = Rite Aid Video Values - get coupons for watching ads
Now, I'll break things down and explain what things are. A glossary of sorts. I'm going to list things in order of how basic it is.

Use this card every time you make a purchase, including prescriptions at Rite Aid because you get reward points. It's a tier system so you get special coupons after you reach a certain amount of points. Points reward details can be found on their website here.

SCR qualifying items will be marked like this in the circular and often on the shelf space:

A qualifying item will look like this in the circular:
She shelf space of the item will often have a tag that looks like the price inset in the ad.
Note: +UP Rewards don't help you in your current purchase, and it doesn't actually affect the cost of the current purchase, but many bloggers, myself included, often factor that into the final price of an item or order. It only benefits you in your next Rite Aid non prescription purchase because it's a coupon you can use next time.
RAVV = Rite Aid Video Values - these are also coupons. Basically, if you go to the RAVV site and watch some ads (they range from 15 seconds to around 3 minutes) you will be rewarded with a coupon to use at Rite Aid for the item that you just watched the ad for. They are manufacturer's coupons that can only be used at Rite Aid. Each coupon has a unique barcode so it can only be used once. While you are watching the ads, you also earn points that when you reach a certain amount, you get a $ off general use coupon for Rite Aid. (You'll need to create an account for that.) Keep in mind you must keep the browser/tab of the ad you're viewing in front otherwise the ad pauses. You must also pay attention to at least the very end of the ad because you'll need to enter a code presented on the screen within 30 seconds or you will not get a coupon. The RAVV coupons are of benefit especially when you stack them with W+, SCR and +UP deals. Of course, you can get even more of a deal when you can find other coupons & rebates to stack with the savings Rite Aid provides.
In short, these are the steps to scoring the best deals at Rite Aid:
- Make purchases using Wellness+ card
- Purchase items that qualifies for Single Check Rebate
- Purchase items that qualifies for +UP Reward coupons (which prints out with your receipt)
- Use $5 off/$25 purchase coupon Rite Aid often releases (if your order is over $25. Make sure you give the cashier this coupon first.)
- Use any +UP Reward coupons from previous purchases
- Use manufacturer coupons
- Save any new +UP Reward coupons that prints out for future use
- Submit receipt info for Single Check Rebate
- Submit for any manufacturer's rebates (if applicable)
Sometimes Rite Aid will have other additional promos such as if you buy X amount of any specific brand or type of item, you'll get a gift card. In those cases you submit for them through the SCR website just like you would submit for a SCR.
I hope this tutorial is useful in helping you score some good deals at Rite Aid. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I read each comment left on this blog and reply as necessary. You can also contact me via email or Twitter.
Happy bargain hunting!

Did I have a money maker at Rite Aid?
I dug through my coupons last night and came up with a few of them I could match up at Rite Aid so I took them with me. Here's what I scored:
(Keep in mind, purchases were made with the W+** card.)
Crest 3D White toothpaste - $2.99
$0.75 coupon from Sunday ads (I believe it was the 9/12 Smart Source)
Paid: $2.24
$1.50 + UP Reward*** earned (I don't think this was mentioned in the ad, I was surprised to get it. The deal is, if you buy $30 worth of specific P&G products you get a $10 +UP Reward, but I don't think the ad mentions you get anything for buying Crest, yet the $1.50 +UP Reward I got was for Crest.)
$2.00 SCR* #54
Final cost: $1.26 money maker!
Reese's Pieces - $2.99
$0.50 coupon from Sunday ads (I believe it was the 9/12 Smart Source)
Paid $2.49
$1.00 +UP Reward earned
Final cost: $1.49
Out of pocket amount due: $4.73
$3 +UP Reward from last night's purchases used
$1 +UP Reward from last night's purchases used
Total: $0.73
Used free $5 gift card from this promo : entire order free
The toothpaste was a $1.26 money maker. If you factor in my gift card usage, my purchases was a $1.99 money maker, not including tax.
I am, a happy bargain hunter. :)
Terminologies:
* SCR = Single Check Rebate - Rite Aid's rebate program.
** W+ = Wellness + - Rite Aid's loyalty program
*** +UP = +UP Rewards - Rite Aid's promo coupon program

A Comedy of Rite Aid
After I got what I needed, I headed over to the cashier to pay for my stuff. The cashier asked me for my Wellness + card and I handed it to her. She scanned it and handed it back to me then proceeded to scan my purchases. I made sure she scanned my coupons, and silly me, I neglected to do the math in my head beforehand. I had too much on my mind. Nonetheless, all of my coupons rang up and the total looked about right so I didn't think anything of it. I paid for my stuff and waited for my receipt. One of the items I bought should've gotten me a $3 UP reward but it wasn't on my receipt so I asked the cashier...who even asked me to make sure. When she realized that the coupon didn't print, she immediately paged the manager on duty. The manager arrived quickly along with another, younger employee. My cashier explained the situation to him, we all studied the item I bought along with the ad to make sure all was right. This is where the humor kicks in:
The employee that arrived with the manager promptly started giving me a spiel the moment he 'overheard' my cashier mention the UP coupon didn't print.
"There's actually nothing we can do about it, you'll need to call 1-800..." he said.
I looked at his name tag and his title said Associate. Uh, ooook...but your Manager is standing right in front of me, studying my purchase and receipt to actually try to figure out what the problem was. He's providing, oh, you know, customer service? Not customer dismissal. Who the heck are you to disprove him?
I said nothing. I ignored him right after 800 because like I'm going to commit a phone number to my memory while someone rattles it off.
It turns out my Wellness + card didn't scan. My cashier clarified that she did indeed scan the card, and I backed her on it. But wait! There's more! Associate boy wasn't done. "Well sometimes when you press the discount button, it..."
"I didn't press the discount button," my cashier said.
If I wasn't so frazzled, I would've high fived my cashier.
The manager asked for my patience and explained he'd have to refund my entire order, and ring it up again properly. It was a huge pain in the ass and I really felt for the manager and cashier. The whole ordeal was a pain but they got me taken care of and for that, I'm happy. In the end, I saved 33% off my order, and provided me some humor. Ah, to be young, cocky, and to know it all...I'm starting to sound old.
Anyway here are the deals I nabbed:
Kraft Mac n Cheese BOGO
Trident Gum = $.17/ea ($3/3 then used $1 off/3 coupon from this Sunday's coupons, plus $.50 coupon from Rite Aid Video Values and got $1 UP Reward.)
Children's Mucinex $8.99 - $1.50 Rite Aid Video Values coupon, $3 UP Rewards

Rite Aid shopping trip
- Crest Scope toothpaste - $2.29
-$2.29 SCR = free - Crest 3D White toothpaste - $2.99
-$1 manny from White Strips sample,
-$2 SCR = free - Coppertone sunblock - $8.99 W+
-$2 in ad coupon
-$3 AdPerk coupon = $3.99 - O-Cello sponges - 2/$3 W+
- Combos/Goldfish snacks - 2/$3 W+
Used $2 +UP from last week's Pantene purchase
Got new $1 +UP for buying Coppertone
Total cost: $2.99 +tax (not factoring the Coppertone $1 +UP since I'll factor that in my next purchase when I use it.)
(There's an even better deal involving SCR #555: spend $25 on qualifying skin care...Coppertone qualifies! get $10 gift card. Spend $50 get $25 gc. Use W+ and SCR# 655 will get you another $5 gc.)
Terminologies:
* SCR = Single Check Rebate - Rite Aid's rebate program.
** W+ = Wellness + - Rite Aid's loyalty program
*** +UP = +UP Rewards - Rite Aid's promo coupon program
Rite Aid deals pt deux
Buy Neutrogena Clinical (SPF 30, Night, or Eye) - $39.99
Use $5 off Neutrogena Clinical coupon (registration required)
Use $5 off $25 purchase coupon
Pay $29.99
Get $1 off $10 hair care +UP
Get $1 off $10 pain relief +UP
Submit for this rebate
The rumor is this is supposed to be a money maker deal because of the rebate, however, that's really an uncertainty because it depends on how the rebate is processed. If they process it factoring the coupon, then all that work is rather moot because all you get is a free product out of it...with or without the coupons. (Well you would've paid the amount equal to the tax.) If they do not factor in the coupons, then you made $10 out of it.
BUT then you can submit it for SCR #555 for $10 Rite Aid gift card. Buy $50 worth of beauty products (the Neutrogena Clinical qualifies) and get a $25 RA gift card. So I aimed for the $25 gc and got:
2 bottles of Aveeno lotion $8.99 each but it's B1G1 1/2 off so the total was $13.49 - $2 printable coupon $11.49
1 Coppertone - W+ = $8.99 - in ad coupon $2 - $3 printable = $3.99
That's kind of pushing it, but it depends on how they allocate and process coupons so we will see. I might have to spring another $5 in skin care purchase to qualify. Buying the Coppertone also scored me another $ +UP coupon.

W+: $12
Coupons: $11
SCR: $11
Total savings: $32

The prices I mentioned here are also posted in this week's (7/11-7/17) Rite Aid circular.
Terminologies:
* SCR = Single Check Rebate - Rite Aid's rebate program.
** W+ = Wellness + - Rite Aid's loyalty program
*** +UP = +UP Rewards - Rite Aid's promo coupon program
If you're unable to score a similar deal at Rite Aid, but you're a Costco member, then you're in luck. You can get a very similar price for batteries at Costco:
In the new Costco coupon book valid July 15-Aug 8, 2010, there is a $2 coupon for Duracell batteries (limit 10 packs.) It's $7.99/24 pk AAA or $10.99/40 pk AA. For AAA batteries, that breaks down to about .33/battery which is only slightly more than the Rite Aid deal.

Rite Aid & Ace Hardware score!

I went to Rite Aid today to take advantage of the deals mentioned in this post, and I had an interesting/confusing but rewarding experience.
One of the deals I wanted to take advantage of was the 2/$7 Pantene shampoo and conditioner, especially since I had a $2 off coupon from a sample I got a little while ago. When I got there, there were sales tags on the shelves, but it was a bit confusing. The tags were in front of the larger 25.4 oz bottles so I grabbed those figuring it would be a better value. Now had I actually read the ad and didn't have my kids with me, I would've known the deal was on the smaller, 12.6 oz bottles. Of course, my kids distracted me during check out and I didn't see the shampoo ringing up as $7.49 each instead of 2/$7 as advertised. I didn't realize this until I got home. Thank goodness I don't live far so I had to run back to Rite Aid to exchange them. Problem was, I used a $2 manufacturer coupon that I got with a Pantene sample for my purchase, and that complicates the return since I want to get credit for the $2 manny, and not lose it. Thankfully I got an awesome cashier who just gave me full credit for my return without subtracting the $2 manny out of it so I got credit for it. Then when I went to pay for the correct size of Pantene, the cashier saw the coupons I got from my last purchase on my receipt and just went tear happy with them, yanking out 2 coupons from the end and rang them up. I honestly didn't think those coupons would work because I hadn't bought enough, but they rang up, so I got an extra $2 off my Pantenes. So my return trip back saved me another $2 making my error a money saving one. Woot! :D
In the end, after it was all said and done, for the 2 bottles of Pantene that are advertised as 2/$7, I paid $3 for them....basically $1.50 each for a bottle of shampoo and conditioner. I'll take it! ;D
I also took advantage of other deals while I was there too including the Dawn dish soap. I had 4 coupons from Home Made Simple: two $1 off and two .25 off. I got 4 bottles (small bottles) of Dawn for $1.48. I also cashed in a free Suave Professionals shampoo coupon and made a bit of money with that one too. The shampoo itself rang up $2.79, but the coupon rang up as $3 off. I also had a $5 off $20 coupon from watching Rite Aid ads on AdPerk.
I also took advantage of the Compound W SCR (Single Check Rebates) Kendall bandages deal and the t-shirts sale as well. (Great for arts project smocks for the kids! In fact one of my kids need one for school as part of their school supplies.) I should get a good chunk back in SCR. Not factoring SCR my savings at Rite Aid today between Wellness card and coupons came to $27 and I only paid $30 after tax...so close to a 50% savings. Plus, $20 is reimbursable by FSA. If I factor in the $9 SCR I should be getting back, I really only paid $1 out of pocket for my purchases at Rite Aid today. My return trip to Rite Aid scored me more Up rewards (they are coupons that print out at the end of your receipt for buying specific promo items.) I got yet another $1 off $10 hair care coupon, $1 off $10 pain relief coupon (I now have 2 of these since I got one my first trip there), and a $2 off non prescription purchase w/minimum $2 purchase. I guess if you factor in those coupons, my Rite Aid score was a $4 money maker!
I will admit, I don't associate Rite Aid with value since drugstore prices for every day items can be pretty high. I kept reading about all these awesome deals with Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens, etc but I was intimidated by them, not to mention, I don't subscribe to the Sunday paper anymore and I doubt I ever will again (long story) so I don't get the necessary coupons to score awesome deals. I'm not sure if this time was luck or what. Maybe it's because I got the coupons already from the samples I request. I'm not sure if I'd have as much luck without manufacturer coupons from the paper, but I'm willing to try again.
I also made a trip to Ace Hardware to take advantage of their 4th of July sale. They had car wash soap on sale for $3.49, free after rebate. They also had caulk for 99 cents, and Jobe's plant food sticks on sale for $1.19, also free after rebate.
I got 2 bonus packages for Jobe's plant foods for free after rebate, car wash for free after rebate (savings of $5.87) along with 2 car wash sponges for 99 cents each on sale, the 99 cents caulk, and we all got free popcorn. :D After all the rebates, I only spent $3.
Rite Aid deals
Assess the ads you watch. Some ads will give you more points (2 points per ad) but they're also longer ads. Unless you need or want the coupon that watching a longer ad (often 1.5 - 3 minutes long) will give you, your time may be better spent watching several 15-30 second ads to get your points.
